John Weir Perry is one of the all-time greats in psychiatry and specifically the work of reenvisioning “schizophrenia” yet sadly, no one seems to have heard of him.
I decided to give him the modern treatment, laying a sound bed underneath his epic description of the true arc of “schizophrenia,” when successfully moved through and completed, which, of course, our society fails to see, by and large, because we are out of touch with such processes.

Think Plato’s cave allegory meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Think the world’s wisdom traditions pouring into psych wards. Think “schizophrenics” rejecting their diagnoses in favor of something much more profound.
It has accumulated so much collective baggage from more than a century of misunderstanding that it does little other than shock and unnerve most people.

It conjures up images of deranged psychopaths, of madmen shouting gobbledgygook on street corners, yet nothing of the beauty or the wisdom inherent in the condition when allowed to unfold in an unrepressed manner, tempered with the right treatment.

We sweep it under the rug. There's a palpable sense of shame embedded within the word itself. It's a topic our culture refuses to have a real conversation about.
I spent years pretending my story didn't exist. I remained in the psychiatric closet. The word “schizophrenia” hung over me like a phantom I couldn’t shake off. I wouldn’t dare let people associate me with such a stigmatized title.
How could I tell people about my bizarre experiences? For years, I spoke around the edges of what was actually occurring. I was immersed in this torturous inward rollercoaster people would never be able to wrap their heads around, especially in the small northern Nevada town I was living in.

Two years ago, I was listening to the Synchronicity podcast with Noah Lampert and the “not-bullshit psychic” he was interviewing, Bernadette Dickinson, was so compelling, I found it necessary to reach out to her and get a reading. 🔮
During our first reading, Bernadette told me I was “in the process of breaking free from my cage,” that I was being liberated from stuck patterns that had been holding me back for years.
When I was diagnosed with "paranoid schizophrenia" in 2011, I never imagined that I would heal, let alone that one day I would be making silly rap videos!
But such is the psychospiritual development process that I call "sacredphrenia." Cutting-edge alternative psychiatrists such as R.D. Laing, John Weir Perry knew about this. They viewed psychosis as an attempt on the part of the unconscious to heal the psyche, eventually (key word: eventually - it took me years of trial and error experimenting with alternative modalities) resulting in a psychologically healthier human being.

Last weekend, I attended a memorial service for a sacredphrenic man who made an indelible mark on the world, even in the midst of his great suffering.
Hundreds gathered to pay tribute to a remarkable human being, known by many as the “Mexican Picasso.” Through his paintings, he seemed to express concepts that were just outside the bounds of most people’s accepted definitions of reality. A cubist, hallucinogenic world, rich with symbol.
Watching Undone was easily one of the more profound experiences of my life. I sobbed for about fifteen minutes at the end of the final episode.
In many ways, it was like watching my own life. The brain injury, the psychotic break, the shamanic opening, the ear ringing, the timelines converging, the messianic vision…
I had a Truman Show-like experience watching this show, as though it was written exactly for me to see at this pivotal point in my life.
